Position Summary 


The Core Labs & Research Infrastructure (CL&RI) at KAUST is a shared research facility, comprising of 12 laboratories run by over 250 staff, with a mission to we deliver research support, training and services to KAUST faculty, students, researchers and partner through stewardship and development of state-of-the-art facilities and technical expertise. This centrally organized facility provides its 1500+ users with access to specialized research equipment and expert staff who have advanced degrees in science and engineering.
The department has strategic objectives to support the KAUST and in-Kingdom research community and to become a key point of reference for research in the region. The science writer and editor produces, edits and curates written content for specialists as well as wider audiences, and builds effective communications for the department’s internal and external communications, with a focus on building awareness, improving and maintaining positive image, and controlling the dissemination of information. The science editor-writer works frequently with native and non-native writers of English to help make their scientific work stories both engaging and understandable to specialists in their fields and general public. 
The position will report to the supervisor of the area and work closely with the Executive Director of the CL&RI in supporting the organization’s goals. 


Major Responsibilities 


News and Events 


  • Research, write, edit, curate and promote newsletter, articles and press releases. 
  • Maintain content pipeline for soliciting, writing, and promoting lab “success stories” and events via CL&RI communication channels. 
  • Liaise with core lab staff and management team to obtain interesting activities for publicity.
  • Propose and drive PR plans for different events/occasions, including CL&RI outreach program.
  • Support CL&RI major events for event communication and marketing efforts.


Social Media 


  • Encourage organic growth of social media channels. 
  • Maintain regular content updates and engagement on Twitter, Linkedin and Instagram.
  • Encourage staff participation and use of social media as official communication.


Website and evergreen content 


  • Expand website buildouts to provide more detailed content of [1] Facilities, [2] Services and [3] for all CL&RI.
  • This involves content writing and editing, working with lab staff and directors to create and structure content.
  • Maintain regular content updates areas of website.


Communication strategy, alignment, and messaging 


  • Major role in supporting the development of effective CL&RI annual communication and PR strategies and plans.
  • Host monthly editorial meeting for Lab Directors to ensure continual pipeline of content.
  • Coordinate flow of information for both internal and external communications.
  • Build working relationships with key individuals in each Core Lab, GBC, President’s Office, I&ED, Saudi Affairs, Community Life and Research Centers.


Other communications platforms


  • Develop and maintain content for other communication platforms deemed to be suitable for CL&RI communications strategy, including video, flyer, and KAUST TV.
  • Write speeches for Executive Director for CL&RI.




  • Minimum 5 years of professional scientific and/or creative writing experience.
  • Excellent English proficiency in writing, speaking and reading.
  • Outstanding writing skills with the ability to translate complex scientific subjects into stylish, interesting and exciting prose for a broad audience.
  • Exceptional ability to write clear, concise, accurate and interesting articles covering a broad range of technical/scientific topics for scientist and general public. 
  • Strong and effective verbal communication skills.
  • Outstanding critical thinking skills with meticulous attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with individuals with varying levels of writing capabilities and language competencies.
  • High level of creativity and social perceptiveness.
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team environment with colleagues from a variety of cultural backgrounds.
  • Ability to work under pressure and to meet conflicting and tight deadlines.
  • Proactive and flexible.





  • Master’s degree in science or engineering; or bachelor’s degree in science or engineering with master’s degree in science communication or English with proven experience in working with scientists and scientific writing.
  • Experience in journalisms or public relations is an advantage.
