Position Summary

Reporting to the Manager of Preservation and Digital Services, the Digital Archivist leads the development and implementation of the University’s digital preservation program, establishing and implementing policies and procedures for the management of digital materials.



Major Responsibilities

  • Lead, improve or implement digital archives technology solutions such as email archiving, records management software or systems or digital records issues such as digitization and other storage options for University records
  • Create, document and manage workflows for appraising, acquiring, describing, processing, and preserving archival materials in accordance with best practices. Examples may include transferring digital materials to library-controlled storage using hard drives, FTP, shared drives, and other methods or creating disk images from legacy media such as hard drives, floppy disks and ZipDrives and in archiving research software
  • Manage the web archiving program, including creating and monitoring web crawls, performing quality control checks and supervising others in quality control checks, and creating descriptive metadata for web content that accords with professional standards
  • Create accession records for University records in both analog and digital form transferred to the Archives' custody
  • Assist the University Archivist and Records Manager in establishing records retention guidelines for University records in both analog and digital form
  • Work closely with repository and systems staff to design and implement appropriate preservation and access solutions
  • Participate in developing procedures for arranging and describing digital materials according to professional standards, implement these procedures, and train staff on these procedures
  • Maintain active and professional involvement to ensure that University approaches and practices to records management remain up to date.
  • Represent KAUST at international and regional professional associations and contribute to the advancement of archival theory and digital preservation practices



Qualifications & Experience Required

  • At least two years experience required, a minimum of three years preferred, in information management, information science, information systems or related field
  • A high degree of technical facility, experience working in command line interfaces, and the demonstrated ability to learn new technical skills through research and self-study
  • Experience managing digital records and archives, including digital preservation
  • Experience working with digital preservation systems or tools and workflows
  • Experience working with metadata standards such as ISAD (G) EAD, PREMIS and METS
  • Familiarity with tools and workflows supporting the management of digital records including digital preservation systems, electronic records management systems, and data curation tools
  • Experience harvesting and preserving web materials, with or without working with a web archiving service provider
  • Experience creating disk images from legacy media such as hard drives, floppy disks and ZipDrives
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • A strong user focus and service orientation, excellent analytical, interpersonal and communication skills, and an ability to embrace change


  • Familiarity with digital collections and management platforms, as well as research data management platforms and solutions, such as virtualized computing environments.



  • Required:  BA/BS (computer science or related field preferred) or equivalent education and experience
  • Preferred:  MLS or MIS degree from an ALA-accredited program and/or advanced degree in subject discipline
