The Industrial Hygienist is responsible for implementing the industrial hygiene program within KAUST research areas and laboratories. This includes conducting risk assessments, exposure monitoring, working with the KAUST Health Occupational Medicine Physician, and making recommendations for workplace changes and operational behaviors to minimize potential exposures and assisting with the laser safety program.


Major Responsibilities:

  • Develop and maintain industrial hygiene programs such as, but not limited to, ergonomics, exposure monitoring, indoor air quality, laboratory ventilation, laser safety, noise, PPE, particularly hazardous substances, radiation, reproductive hazards, respiratory protection, working with animals, etc.
  • Conduct workplace assessments, risk assessments, and exposure monitoring using a variety of sampling methods and industrial hygiene meters and monitoring equipment including developing detailed sampling reports and recommendations.
  • Conducts inspections and incident investigations of research areas, service corridors, Technology Park buildings, and other areas.
  • Serve as the Research Safety Team liaison with the KAUST Health Occupational Medicine Physician and support the university effort for AAALAC accreditation.
  • Provide support to the laboratory design review program, laboratory ventilation management program, toxic gas monitoring program, and laser safety program.
  • Develop and provide Standard Operating Procedures, guidance documents, training materials, webpage information, etc. related to industrial hygiene programs and services.
  • Work in partnership with Campus and Technology Park Services, Lab Equipment Maintenance, and campus stakeholders to ensure proper operation and efficient use of ventilation devices.
  • Perform other applicable tasks and duties assigned within the realm of the employee’s knowledge, skills, and abilities in the field of his/her position.



  • Knowledge of occupational health standards, codes, and regulations.
  • Knowledge of methods, procedures, and techniques used in collecting and testing samples such as dusts, mists, fumes, vapors, noise, radiation, heat stress and biological agents.
  • Proficiency in using a variety of industrial hygiene meters and monitoring equipment.
  • Skills in analyzing and evaluating a wide variety of technical data, test results, reports, and plans.
  • Must have a high level of proficiency with MicroSoft Office Suite (Access, Excel, Powerpoint, Word), Sharepoint, and Adobe products.
  • Must be self-motivated with the abilities to work independently and within a team environment.
  • Must be able to multitask on several projects, tasks, and duties on a regular basis, and meet deadlines.




  • Bachelors degree in industrial hygiene, life sciences, engineering, environmental science, or related field required.
  • Masters degree in industrial hygiene, life sciences, engineering, environmental science, or related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 7 years in industrial hygiene or related field. Previous work experience at a university or research and development organization preferred.
  • Certification in Industrial Hygiene (CIH) or registered occupational hygienist preferred.
  • Certification as a laser safety officer preferred.
  • Due to high campus customer contact, must have strong oral and written English language skills.
  • Experience working in a multicultural environment preferred.
