Library Access Services Lead

Position Summary:


Access Services Lead provides leadership and direction to a team of professionals involved in managing and providing access to the library’s print and electronic collections. The primary responsibilities of the position are to manage collection access and discovery, including electronic resource licenses and ERM, metadata and cataloging services, as well as the assessment of these services. S/he provides strategic planning and direction to these services as well as supervising the staff and their daily operations. This position requires excellent communication skills; the drive to learn and explore technologies relevant to resource management and access; and the ability to continuously improve and update the team’s operations. This position is part of the Library’s management team and reports to Manager, Collections and Information Services.


Major Responsibilities:


  • Manage specialists in resource organization, public access, cataloguing/metadata services of print and electronic resources.
  • Lead improvement projects in resource organization, discovery, public access and assessment services by identifying and implementing latest standards, technologies and tools.
  • Administrator for electronic resource management and discovery tools (e.g. webscale discovery tool, the ERM system, publisher platform access, usage platforms management, A-Z portals and lists, OpenURL tools, etc.).
  •  Administrator for online content management tools (e.g. LibGuides, LibAnswers, and Reference Management Systems).
  • Administrator for public access resource tools (e.g. Browzine, PressDisplay).
  • Coordinate support to the Library’s Collections team in areas such as technical evaluation, licensing and access issues.
  • Lead all operational activities related to his/her responsibilities
  • Report to the library management team on the Access Services team’s performance for improvements.
  • Maintain knowledge and records keeping of the area of operations.
  • Collaborate with Library Systems team in improving and implementing ERMs, discovery layers, proxy access and latest technology tools.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve e-resource access issues for KAUST community and liaise with related IT departments and vendors.
  • Represent the library in international professional platforms and special interest groups or boards of vendors and publishers.
  • Participate in professional trainings and career development activities and workshops in-kingdom and out-of-kingdom.
  • Participate in library’s outreach activities, InfoDesk services and online reference services.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Experience and Competencies:


  • Experience in managing multiple projects concurrently, to set and meet deadlines, and to adapt to new and changing situations, priorities and technologies.
  • Experience in supervising a team individuals and groups while appreciating the unique contribution of individuals from varied cultures, nationalities, genders, and ages.
  • Experience in managing and implementing projects in web scale discovery, access platforms or ERM solutions, such as Serials Solutions’ Summon, Springshare’s LibGuides or other related platforms.
  • Extensive knowledge of the lifecycle of e-resources, including: acquisition, organization, access and complexity of multiple stages and processes.
  • Understanding of electronic resource licensing terms and the legal framework, including substantial knowledge and understanding of aspects such as international copyright restrictions, fair use, etc.
  • Extensive knowledge of metadata, systems of cataloging, etc. used to organize e-resources. Knowledge should extend beyond traditional metadata formats (e.g. MARC, RDA, etc.) and into modern and scientific schemas (e.g. Dublin Core, Darwin Core, EAD, etc.).
  • Extensive knowledge of public access, usage assessment and analysis of library collections, including familiarity with standards and protocols such as COUNTER, SUSHI, etc.
  • Knowledge of current issues and trends in electronic resource management.
  • Experience in working with an Integrated Library System or a next-generation resource management system.
  • Broad understanding of academic research library operational functions, emerging technologies and trends in information technology field.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated customer service and experience interacting with a diverse population including faculty, researchers, graduate students, staff and vendors.




  • Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science or similar professional degree required, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum 8-years of experience in an academic library or a research university environment providing e-resource management or public services, or a combination of both.
