RPP - Research Translation Specialist - (Lifecycle)

Position Summary


Reporting to the manager of research translation, the Research Translation Engineer/Specialist will provide expert consultancy and engineering services to the Research Centers, and be able to deploy their skills broadly across a number of projects focused on research translation. The job holder will work with a team of engineers, researchers, designers, and stakeholders to drive the innovation, development, testing and deployment of innovative technologies at KAUST. The role will involve collaborative projects across different research groups within KAUST and other premier academic and industrial partner institutions that focus on impactful research and science-driven technology development.

  • Demonstrated ability to analyze workflows in order to streamline and improve business processes and workflows

  • Ability to work collaboratively and foster a cooperative work environment with multi-cultural research faculty, university research administrators, graduate students, colleagues, and others at all levels who are engaged in world-class research
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills in English. Strong Arabic communication skills is a plus

Major Responsibilities


  • Perform cost and environmental impacts analysis on technical concepts, chemical processes and sustainable energy systems to develop an understanding of their associated impacts and utilization in future products and commercial systems
  • Analyze scalability issues, barriers, market and policy opportunities for identified emerging technologies and solutions at KAUST
  • Perform technology literature surveys and techno-economic assessments of concepts and systems
  • Contribute through the development of datasets and life-cycle as well as cost assessment models
  • Develop conceptual process designs based on experimental results from the bench/pilot scale experiments
  • Carry out detailed economic analysis and life-cycle greenhouse gas assessment, identify key cost and emissions drivers and help scientists prioritizing their research efforts
  • Participate in technical and economic feasibility discussions related to new processes and concepts
  • Proactively engage in discussions with other research groups to identify their TEA and LCA needs
  • Translate stakeholder input (e.g. from partners, technical team, end users, and industry representatives) into high level and low level system requirements
  • Collect and document feedback and identify necessary metrics to measure and optimize various system parameters against functional requirements.
  • Contribute in the preparation of demonstration prototypes, internal reports, patent applications, and presentations
  • Work closely with the research translation manager to plan strategic scientific translation activities




Required Education and Experience


  • Masters’ degree in Engineering or Sciences with 8 years of industry experience or a PhD with 4 years industry experience
  • Demonstrated working knowledge in concept prototyping and product development


Required Qualifications


  • Extensive experience utilizing Life Cycle Assessment and calculation tools in research and development projects (e.g., Ecochain, Mobius, SimaPro, GaBi and openLCA)
  • Extensive experience using and knowledge of commercial and free life cycle inventory databases
  • Demonstrated ability to leverage ecoinvent and many other leading life cycle inventory databases to provide scientifically accurate footprint data for prototypes and products
  • Knowledge and awareness of new methods for measuring sustainability performance developed by the European Commission and other agencies
  • Demonstrated working experience calculating environmental and health impacts for the entire life cycle of a product (from raw material procurement to disposal)
  • Working experience with the various developed standards to determine the CO2 balance of products (e.g., PAS 2050, the GHG and ISO 14067)
