Major Responsibilities

Team Lead

  • Staffs, trains, manages and evaluates the performance of the Integrative Activities team with diverse, competent, value-add, and motivated team members who perform programmatic and administrative monitoring and activities for internally and externally funded programs.
  • Optimizes resources in carrying out assigned responsibilities and ensure timely completion of assignment according to established standards.
  • Ensures that records are maintained in the KAUST data systems based on the approved filing structure for easy access and retrieval and audit scrutiny.
  • Hosts effective and efficient meetings within the team and across teams to effectuate open, transparent communication.
  • Leads by example by following established standard procedures, ensuring that assigned team members do the same, and makes recommendations for improvements.



Integrative Activities

  • Manages the establishment, redefinition, and strengthening of strategic cross-disciplinary research at KAUST involving researchers, advisory boards, global collaborators, and industry.
  • Reviews the analysis of work methods, program functions and processes utilizing qualitative and quantitative techniques to recommend solutions to complex issues related to research collaborations that have impact on the performance of cross-disciplinary activities.
  • Manages the integration of the basic research and engineering activities of cross-disciplinary awards, primarily Centers, with pedagogy and downstream impact .
  • Serves as the primary contact for KAUST faculty and the Research Centers interested in initiating or enhancing collaborative multi-, inter-, and transdisciplinary activities with awardees, global collaborators  for commercialization opportunities arising from awards.
  • Catalyzes and incubate novel cross-disciplionary concepts and promotes successful handoff of translational opportunities for Centers and other cross-disciplinary clusters.
  • Supports the Director of OSR with strategic funding program planning and award reporting to KAUST senior management.
  • Functions effectively with other management team members and other stakeholders at KAUST to ensure a collaborative, synergistic team environment and communicates effectively in oral and written form with others in all areas of responsibility.  Develops and implements programs, projects, policies and procedures across the Office and KAUST priorities.
  • Actively and effectively participates in Office-wide initiatives and priorities by undertaking planning, development, and implementation of long-range plans for cross-cutting activities.
  • Participates in management reviews, risk assessment and issues management.
  • Leads the organization and planning of workshops, conferences, and seminars that provide information to KAUST faculty on research trends, collaborative research best practice, and proposal preparation.




Program Planning and Award Monitoring

When assigned additional cross-functional duties by the Integrative Activities, may lead funding program competitions and award monitoring to include the following responsibilities:


  • Administers effective and efficient funding opportunity competitions as assigned, paying particular attention to increasing the size and quality of the reviewer pool and ensuring participation of relevant and high-quality reviewers. 
  • Monitors assigned awards and awardees, including reviewing and recommending acceptance of periodic progress reports, prior approval requests, ensuring compliance with award terms and conditions, and OSR procedures and guidelines, and supporting the wider Office.
  • Uses consistent application of internal procedures and guidelines, with exceptions vetted with management as appropriate. 
  • Serves as responsible party in communications with awardees, actively engaging in frequent discussion with the KAUST research community, including global collaborators, to remain cognizant of ongoing and anticipatory award-related activities.
  • Provides information to and coordinates with other departments in KAUST, other organization, the scientific community concerning assigned activities.
  • Submits output and outcome data for inclusion in management reports within the requested timeframe.

  • Excellent overall computer skills and solid experience in data management software (quantitative and qualitative) including databases (web-based and local);
  • Presentation skills, including experience presenting to senior leadership;
  • Training skills, including experience in the design and facilitation of short- and long-term training program.
  • Knowledge of project management principles and practices; and
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills in English.



Required Education

Requires any combination of education and equivalent experience of a Ph.D. or equivalent in science areas related to KAUST’s mission.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of grants management, both pre- and post-award administration, is highly desirable;
  • Experience with a grant funding agency is highly desirable;
  • Knowledge of peer-reviewed research funding operations and/or experience with merit-based competitive procurement processes a plus.
  • Demonstrated high level stature as researcher and scientist
  • International experience is a plus; and Arabic language skills.
