Job Purpose

 

The Librarian for Scholarly Publishing and Information Services provides expert research support and instruction while leading initiatives in scholarly publishing, open access, and information services to advance KAUST’s academic and research mission. This role serves as a strategic liaison to the academic divisions, supporting faculty, researchers, and students in discovering, accessing, and utilizing scholarly resources.

 

The librarian is responsible for managing publisher relations, licensing, open access publishing workflows, and collection development. With a strong focus on innovation and service excellence, the position ensures the delivery of user-centered services that enhance research impact, visibility, and access to scholarly information

 

 

Major Accountabilities

 

  • Execute library initiatives and services related to scholarly publishing.
  • Develop and maintain a broad network of partners among faculty, researchers, students, and administrators to advocate, inform, support, and advance the library’s scholarly publishing programs and goals.
  • Identify and recommend collaboration and support opportunities for faculty, researchers, and students in areas such as open access, copyright, research data management, and special research collections.
  • Promote scholarly publishing and advocate for open-access policies within the academic institution.
  • Assist researchers in tracking and maximizing the impact of their research through citation analysis and metrics.
  • Provide expertise and guidance on scholarly publishing issues, including open-access publishing licenses, copyright, and intellectual property.
  • Continuous monitoring and assessment of the library’s Open Access Publishing program.
  • Develop and implement a program of education, training, advocacy, support, and information sharing regarding various issues that promote effective sharing and barrier-free access to scholarly publishing goals.  
  • Ensure that licensing agreements align with the library's open access and scholarly publishing strategies.
  • Contribute to the development of institutional policies related to scholarly publishing.
  • Stay current and keep library staff up to date on national, regional, and international trends, legislation, and pending changes in scholarly publishing.  
  • Performs the collection development, evaluation, and assessment processes; implements decisions in line with annual collection development plans set by the departmental strategy.
  • Collaborate with librarians and negotiate with publishers for subscription renewals of resources.
  • Develop and deliver information literacy instruction sessions tailored to the needs of different academic programs and courses.
  • Provide expert research assistance to library patrons, including students, faculty, and researchers. 
  • Provide one-on-one research consultations to assist users with complex research projects. 
  • Create instructional materials, research guides, and online tutorials to support user education. 
  • Assist with literature reviews, data management, and research organization. 
  • Offer guidance on using library databases, online catalogs, research tools, and software applications. 
  • Assist users in locating and accessing relevant print and electronic resources.
  • Offer guidance on advanced search strategies, citation management, and research methodologies.
  • Engage in outreach activities to raise awareness of library services and resources. 
  • Collaborate with faculty and departments to organize research-related events and workshops. 
  • Stay current with library and information science developments, particularly research support and information literacy.
  • Executes all aspects of the academic course reserves processes, such as communicating with faculty about the course reserves calls, submission process, and policies, including keeping the Textbooks LibGuide and forms up to date.
  • Coordinates, formulates, implements, and manages the operation of all circulation procedures; performs administrative detail work and maintains appropriate records and statistics. 
  • Oversee circulation, resource sharing requests, requests for inter-library loans, and reservation of resources, and handle all enquiries related to such requests.  
  • Provide oversight over Information Services desk duties, including maintaining user accounts, course reserve & physical material processing, and checking out and checking in physical and shelving material. 
  • Provide information services to users in-person and via email/chat, communicating and adhering to library policy, and escalating to other librarians and the manager.
  • Performs reference services and collects statistics on interactions to help inform decision-making related to service improvements at the library.
  • Identify and expand resource sharing opportunities with other libraries internally and externally, within publishers, set guidelines.  
  • May supervise a team of professional staff or projects related to user-centered and scholarly publishing activities. 
  • Represent the library in relevant internal and external communities and projects.

 

 

Competencies

 

Required

 

  • Has vast knowledge and expertise in planning and executing a scholarly communication program in an academic or research library setting. 
  • Evidence of knowledge and experience in copyright law as it relates to fair use and library exemptions, new modes of scholarly communication, open access initiatives, authors’ rights, and scholarly use of intellectual property. 
  • Familiarity with institutional repositories and digital asset management systems.
  • Commitment to promoting open access and ethical scholarly practices.  
  • Experience drafting and reviewing policies, procedures, and guidelines.  
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work both independently and as part of a team.  
  • A strong user focus and service orientation, excellent analytical, interpersonal and communication skills, and an ability to embrace change.  

 

 

Qualifications

 

  • A Master's degree in Library and Information Science (MLIS), or a related field.

 

Experience

 

  • 3+ years’ experience in a similar role within an Academic or Research Library setting.
