This role sets the strategic direction for KAUST in terms of Fire Safety standards to be implemented and maintained across all buildings on site and for KAUST's areas of responsibility in Thuwal. It is required to determine which international codes should be applied to KAUST and oversee their correct implementation in all KAUST buildings.

The manager of this new team (Fire Loss Prevention Tern) is charged with ensuring there is always sufficient resource with the right skills to meet all requirements to review designs and monitor construction in a timely maimer. Failure to do so could delay significant projects and trigger the application of penalty clauses by the external contract companies. The volume of work for this team is steadily increasing as activity previously undertaken by Aramco is taken over by KAUST (Town Center upgrades & Oasis apartments) and new projects are started such as the new housing project, the new hotel and the new business park buildings for Dow and Aramco.


Major Responsibilities:


  • Stipulating that buildings are correctly designed and constructed in accordance with the relevant International Fire Safety Codes and Standards.
  • Interact with projects managers, Directors and VP's as appropriate to ensure the strategy is successfully implemented across all new build and alteration work undertaken at KAUST.
  • Manage a team of professional engineers and inspectors who must maintain the credibility and authority to ensure their instructions are complied with by all agencies operating, altering or constructing buildings at KAUST. This includes interacting with sizeable external construction and operating companies who undertake independent activities at KAUST.




  • Minimum of Degree qualified in related discipline i.e. Fire Engineering.
  • A minimum of 5 years in a similar role within a city Fire Brigade facing a similar risk profile.
  • Previous managerial experience in a large city Fire Brigade as an operational fire officer at a mid to senior management level, preferable incl uding some fire investigation work.
  • Direct experience of dealing with large fires in high risk buildings and a thorough understanding of the mechanisms of fire propagation and risk control.
  • Previous experience in positions of authority where a high degree of judgement, credibility and leadership are required.
  • A proven ability to make well informed decisions using sound judgment on complex matters requiring a balance between significant costs and risk.




  • Displays confidence, int egrity , personal presence and a level of authority commensurate with the responsibilities of the role and able to withstand pressure from external contractor representatives and KAUST senior managers whenever there is any attempt to compromise on fire safety standards.
