Position Summary

The Marine Electronics Laboratory is an integral part of the Coastal and Marine Resources Core Lab. It is responsible for the design, fabrication, integration, and deployment of ocean going instrumentation, as well as maintaining a sub-sea simulation facility containing a full ocean depth, hydrostatic test chamber and several indoor ballasting tanks. The lab also holds traceable standards for the calibration of Conductivity, Temperature and Pressure sensors and is currently undergoing accreditation as a calibration Lab.  A major focus of the lab is in supporting underwater vehicles including the piloting and maintenance of a fleet of autonomous ocean gliders and remotely operated vehicles (ROVs).


The Marine Instrumentation Engineer will design, construct, operate and maintain electronics and scientific equipment related to marine research.  

Primarily working with subsea equipment and vehicles, the engineer will work between the electronics, calibration and hydrostatic test labs to ensure all sea going instrumentation is fit for the application.  

The engineer will also periodically take part in research cruises, especially when deploying newly developed equipment. 


Major Responsibilities


  • Multi-Disciplinary role working closely with peers to develop and maintain subsea instrumentation
  • Work with scientific and technical colleagues to foster research ideas and develop research and experimental setups
  • Will conduct Hardware and Software development, including the design, prototype, test, calibrate and deployment of marine subsea systems
  • Will take responsible for projects encompassing the whole product lifecycle
  • Is able to work at sea for extended periods of time, as part of oceanographic research cruises, including the participation in activities on deck and in the lab.
  • Will devise novel approaches to problems and prepare or modify drawings, specifications, calculations etc, to applicable codes and accepted best engineering practices and standards
  • Will be responsible for the operation of the Hydrostatic test and ballasting facility
  • Will be responsible for the operation and maintenance of remotely operated vehicles (ROV) and autonomous underwater vehicles (AUV)




  • Excellent English writing, communication and inter-personal skills.
  • Highly motivated, proactive, well organized and results oriented.
  • Proven experience in computer aided design of printed circuit boards, and mechanical systems.
  • Experience in programing PLCs




  • Bachelor degree in Electrical engineering 
  • 5-7 years of experience working with subsea equipment and vehicles
  • Shipboard experience and seagoing ability is essential.
  • Demonstrated track record and accomplishments in the development of instrumentation related to marine systems
