Position Summary:


The Marine Electronics Laboratory is an integral part of the Coastal and Marine Resources Core Lab. It is responsible for the design, fabrication, integration, and deployment of ocean going instrumentation, as well as maintaining a sub-sea simulation facility containing a full ocean depth, hydrostatic test chamber and several indoor ballasting tanks. The lab also holds traceable standards for the calibration of Conductivity, Temperature and Pressure sensors and is currently undergoing accreditation as a calibration Lab.  A major focus of the lab is in supporting underwater vehicles including the piloting and maintenance of a fleet of autonomous ocean gliders and remotely operated vehicles (ROVs).


The role of the Supervisor, Marine Electronics & Instrumentation requires a high level of engineering and project management capabilities. The position holder leads a team of engineers and technicians and shall partner with research teams, in developing new marine lab and field systems and equipment, designing and fabricating electronic prototypes, and updating and modifying research equipment as necessary.


Major Responsibilities: 


  • Ensure the facility has the necessary best practices in the areas of Health, Safety and Environmental including alignment with universities policies in such areas.
  • Develop and supervise the proper implementation of standard operating procedures (SOPs)
  • Implement and manage KPIs, ensuring appropriate control and monitoring over budgets, maintenance, equipment downtime and capital planning.
  • Provide periodic reporting on all KPIs of the facility including budgeting, maintenance, safety and utilization, including prompt reporting on issues and non-compliance of experimental activities.
  • Ensure all services are aligned with the central administration service platforms including compliance with requirements and specifications.
  • Drive innovation and best practices into the range of capabilities including ensuring best in class control, monitoring and quality of services.
  • Oversee inventory management and control of all equipment, and consumables.
  • Coordinate with users for effective planning and proper execution of engineering projects
  • Establish and monitor training and certification programs for users
  • Plan and organize visits of delegations to the facilities to showcase capabilities and attract interest.
  • Lead and provide supervision for engineers and technicians in designing, building, operating, maintaining and/or calibrating scientific equipment and subsea systems both in lab and during deployment;
  • Lead novel R&D conceptual design meetings with service requesters and researcher parties to define design criteria, develop feasible design concepts, and identify service level requirements;
  • Conceives, develops, prototypes and tests for subsea applications. Review, approve, or modify project designs;
  • Creates and maintain documentation of concepts, designs, drawings and fabrication orders compiles and analyzes operational, test, and research data to establish performance standards for newly designed or modified products/processes;
  • Develops inventory system to maintain appropriate stock levels of supplies and parts;
  • Prepares activity reports for management, and draft proposals/reports for clients;
  • Plan and develop projects and oversee production and quality control;
  • Direct and coordinate production, operations, quality assurance, testing, and/or maintenance in the electronics shops within established safety practices and procedures;
  • Train and mentor other engineers, supporting staff and students;
  • Has the ability and accepts to go to sea and work for extended periods of time (1-2 months per year with individual legs between 2-4 weeks) as part of oceanographic cruises, including participating in the activities on deck and in labs;




  • At least 10 years of pertinent experience in electronics and marine applications i.e., component and system level engineering, automation systems software and hardware development, and automation systems and instruments troubleshooting;
  • 10 years’ experience as an electronics design engineer;
  • 5 years of experience in managing engineering projects related to instrumentation in marine research.

Qualifications and Experience: 


  • A minimum of a BS degree in Electrical/Electronics Engineering. It is highly preferred the successful candidate possesses an MS or graduate degree in pertinent engineering disciplines;
